Photowalk 3: Tom Hicks

On this photowalk, West Midlands based photographer Tom Hicks will meet you at Centrala at 10:30am in Centrala for a brief artist talk and then take you for a photowalk around Digbeth canals. The photowalk will last for approximately 3 hours.
Tom Hicks is an artist based in the Black Country whose work documents the postindustrial landscape, typography and everyday urban details of the West Midlands. His work has been widely exhibited, including a major retrospective at Birmingham City University, which featured over 100 images taken between 2017 and 2025. The University of Cambridge staged a solo exhibition of his work in late 2025.His work has appeared in The Guardian, the BBC, and in numerous regional exhibitions and projects. Tom’s publications include the photobooks I.D.S.T. (The Modernist, 2020, with poet Liz Berry), The Dereliction (Hercules Editions, 2021, also with Berry) and the photobook Black Country Type (The Modernist, 2023).
His new photobook, Black Country Type II, is a further exploration of the idiosyncratic visual culture of the West Midlands.
There is a small fee for the photowalk, which helps cover printing costs and contributes towards venue hire.
