canals: A PRISM Project exploring Digbeth* and its Waterways
Photowalk 2: Matthew Wakefield
11th July 2026
On this photowalk, Birmingham photographer Matthew Wakefield will focus on the Spaghetti Junction, one of the most iconic landmarks in Birmingham. While there is no direct link between Spaghetti Junction and Digbeth, they share the same heritage and form part of the same urban geography. The waterways in the Digbeth area connect to the main Birmingham system at Digbeth Junction. From there, they flow into the Grand Union and then, via the Birmingham and Fazeley route, reach the waterways around Spaghetti Junction.
Matt will meet you at Copeley HillB23 7PH at the underpass at 11.45am for a 12pm start.
We will have a stop at Salford Circus island before heading through the underpass that leads to Lichfield Road. Turn Right and down a slope towards the canal, then Right under the bridge across a couple of bridges then beneath the M6 and River Tame. We’ll go as far as we can in that direction then head back the way we came, then under a longer bridge and along the towpath, past the memorial to DC Mark Swindell, before reversing again and heading back the way we came back to Copeley Hill. We aim to have you back there for 2pm.
Matt Wakefield is an urban street and architectural photographer known for a distinctive moody, high-contrast style that transforms the overlooked corners of the West Midlands into compelling compositions. Matt’s ethos centers on learning by doing—constantly experimenting with light, lines, and geometry on the street. Having successfully led numerous urban photography walks across the local area, Matt is a firm believer that the most important part of any camera is the ‘first few inches behind the viewfinder,’ ; emphasizing vision and perspective over gear.
There is a small fee for the photowalk, which helps cover printing costs and contributes towards venue hire.
